The celebration of birthdays is something that Serrano interprets as a way to recall, remember, and reflect on memories and experiences that celebrate life. A particular birthday party that Serrano has reflected back to is her Nana’s 90th birthday party, something that was celebrated every late August. It wasn’t until her passing that she learned her Nana was given a different birth date when she immigrated to the United States. In this solo exhibition Sage Serrano explores the concept of birthdays, birth dates, and identity. Happy Belated Birthday! features drawings and sculptures that have been inspired by birthdays past and to come.
